Your kitchen floors should serve as a base on which the style and function of your cabinets and countertops thrive. Consider the daily use of a kitchen when choosing your floor, keeping in mind that it is a high traffic area, prone to dust, dirt, and spills. You need a floor that is moisture-resistant as well as safe, to prevent falls and other accidents.
Tile and slate make excellent kitchen floors, and are very popular for their beautiful appearance and resistance to moisture. The grout used to secure tile and slate squares in place provides excellent resistance to water, spills, cleaning fluid, and any other liquid that could threaten the life of your kitchen floor (or the safety of you and your loved ones). Tile is expensive, however, and can crack when hit with heavy objects.
Hardwood gives a great look to a kitchen and can appear modern or traditional. It does need to be resealed periodically to protect against moisture, and real hardwood is expensive.
Vinyl is a good budget-conscious alternative for kitchen floors. It is scratch resistant, and much softer than tile or hardwood, giving dropped dishes a better chance for survival. Vinyl with a complex texture may be difficult to clean,
Laminate flooring is another affordable option, and like vinyl, is a "soft" surface to lay down in the kitchen, though it can tend to scratch easily and leave dents from high traffic.
