Placing new hinges. Refacing the cabinet drawers.

The hinges for your new doors should be placed at about 2" from the top and the bottom of the doors. Then screw the hinges on the door to the frame. If you choose to reuse the old door hinges, it is a good idea to make new holes in the cabinets. If you don't, there's a good chance the doors will quickly come loose. If using new hinges, refer to the instructions. These should tell you how to adjust the hinges to ensure the doors are level. This may take a little patience. The aim is to have the same gap between facing doors from top to bottom. You might find it helpful to use a spirit level.

Refacing the kitchen drawers

Now is a good moment to replace the drawer slides on your cabinet drawers. Since your cabinets were built, it's very likely that modern runners are smoother than the old ones and come with dampers. The first task is therefore to remove your old drawer slides.

How you attach your new drawer fronts will depend on whether your existing drawers are three or four sided.

The first step if your drawer has three sides is to ensure that the drawer front, made up of the edges of the bottom and the left and right sides, is even. If any side extends beyond any other, trim with a saw. If your drawer has four sides, carefully remove the old drawer face, taking care not to damage the box.

The second step is to attach the new drawer slides. These should be flush with the front edge of the drawer box and parallel with each other. You are now ready to attach your new drawer front.

Screw the drawer front to the box, but not too tightly at first. You may need to adjust it later. Slide the drawer into the opening, and check the setting, height and alignment. A spirit level will be helpful. After performing any necessary adjustments, tighten the screws, and you're done!
