Face-frame or Frameless Kitchen Cabinets

To Frame or Not to Frame

Face-frame cabinets, the most popular type in the US, have a frame around the front edge of the cabinet box. The door is attached to this frame, making this cabinet type easier to install. Frameless (or European) cabinets do not have this front frame, so the cabinet doors are hinged to the cabinet box instead. Both provide ample durability and storage for your valuable dishware.

Face-frame cabinets borrow their design from furniture, creating a more traditional style and giving your kitchen a classic look. Depending on your personal taste, face-frame cabinets may suit your home better than frameless cabinets.

Frameless cabinets are more contemporary and can be found in newer or more modern homes. They allow unobstructed access into the cabinet, and create a clean, even sleek exterior depending on the cabinet style and finish.

What Should I Choose?

You can achieve style and function with both types of cabinets. While face-frame cabinets are the most popular, more and more homeowners are moving toward frameless cabinets because the same function can be achieved through a more contemporary design.

If you are considering new kitchen cabinet installation or kitchen cabinet refacing, both options are available to you. Many stock cabinets are frameless, making construction and installation easier. There are just as many material, color, and hardware options with both types, giving you the ability to customize your kitchen whether you choose to frame your cabinets or not.
